A Final Salute

There are moments when words simply aren’t enough. Watching a soldier stand before us, holding my dad’s final flag and saluting him one last time, was one of those moments.
This was, without a doubt, one of the hardest photographs I have ever captured as a photographer.
My dad was a Vietnam veteran who proudly served our country for many years. Like so many Vietnam veterans, he came home carrying wounds and struggles that weren’t always visible. His years after Vietnam were filled with lifelong health issues and nearly 50 surgeries. He battled the lasting effects of Agent Orange, faced bladder cancer, which he bravely beat years ago, and eventually received a devastating diagnosis of a glioblastoma.
We had less than eight weeks with him after that final diagnosis.
And through it all, my dad never complained.
He was strong. He was proud. And he was proud to have served his country.
That day, as I watched a soldier hold my dad’s flag and salute him, my heart was filled with both incredible sadness and immense pride.
That flag represented so much more than my dad’s military service. It represented his life, his sacrifices, his strength, and the legacy he leaves behind. It was held with such honor and care.
As I stood behind my phone camera, I was trying to hold back the tears long enough to capture this moment for our family. I knew how important it would be someday to have this photograph; to be able to look back and remember the exact moment my dad was honored one final time.
That final salute will stay with me forever.
To me, this photograph is not simply a picture of a soldier holding a flag. It is a final thank-you. A final recognition of my dad’s service and sacrifice. It is a moment of honor between a soldier who served and a soldier who was being laid to rest.
I will forever be proud to say you were my dad and a Vietnam veteran.
