A Tennessee Sunrise Became a Message from Her Father
Jeanna Cook was sitting on a riverbank in Savannah, Tennessee, trying to make sense of her life, when the sky began to change.
Her father had just passed away, and Cook had come out to the water — one of her favorite places to be — searching for some kind of footing.
"I was sitting on the river bank trying to figure out my life with my dad," Cook recalls. As she watched, dark clouds overhead began to part, giving way to one of the most beautiful sunrises she had ever seen.
"At that point I knew my daddy was there with me, letting me know everything was going to be ok," she said.
A Sky Full of Meaning
For Cook, who is from Savannah and loves being outside on the river as much as she loves photography and travel, the photo captures more than a pretty sky. It captures a moment of transformation.
"My life as I knew it was changing before my eyes," she said.
She believes the shifting clouds and breaking light were her father's way of reassuring her that even as everything around her changed, he hadn't left her.
"I believe it was my daddy saying, things are changing but I'm still with you," Cook said.
It's a feeling she hopes comes through for anyone who sees the photo — that no matter how dark a season looks, there's a new start waiting on the other side of it.
"Hope that everyday there's a new start to begin again," she said.
Look closely and you'll find the detail Cook loves most: the fog lifting off the water as the black clouds slowly move on, making way for the light behind them.
From the River Bank to America's Favorite Photos
When Cook found out she had won, she was at home — and the news left her both stunned and grateful.
"Disbelief and thankful," is how she describes that moment.
For her, winning is proof that she's exactly where she's supposed to be.
"It means anything is possible, and I can see my dreams are within my reach," Cook said.
Honoring the Greatest Man She's Ever Known
In honor of Cook's win Socialmark has made a donation to the American Heart Association.
The choice is deeply personal. Cook's father died of congestive heart failure — a condition Cook has been diagnosed with as well — and she wanted the donation dedicated to him.
"My daddy died of congested heart failure and I also have it, and I wanted it to be dedicated in honor of the greatest man I ever have known," she said.
Grateful for Her People
Cook is thankful for all of her friends and family who rallied behind her photo, and she singled out one supporter in particular: Alyssa Meyers.
"A special thanks to Alyssa Meyers for supporting me in everything I do," Cook said.
A Message to Keep Dreaming Big
Cook's parting words are as much a reflection of her faith as they are of the journey that led to her winning photo.
"Never let anyone tell you you can't, because if God opens that door no man can shut it," she said. "Keep dreaming big."
